Just before 6:00 am on Monday, February 15th, Galesburg Police were dispatched to the 100 block of Walnut Street in reference to a vehicle theft in progress. According to police reports, the caller told officers that she was letting her Nissan sedan run in her driveway and then observed her neighbor pulling driving off in the sedan a short time later. Before officers arrived, the neighbor had pulled back into the driveway. The key fob for the sedan was not in the car, so the vehicle would start to beep and could only travel a certain distance without it. The neighbor was identified as 36-year old Joseph McGahey. As officers met with the victim, who told police the neighbor had broken into her house before, McGahey was observed walking up to the back of the victim’s house as officers were exiting. Officers were informed McGahey had a valid Knox County Warrant for Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and began resisting when officers attempted to detain him. McGahey was eventually placed under arrest, transported to the Knox County Jail, and charged with the warrant, Resisting a Peace Officer, and Theft of a Motor Vehicle.
