Galesburg City Council on Monday approved a $550,000 advance for the Galesburg Public Library to replace the HVAC system at the building they’re currently at.
City Manager Todd Thompson says the purchase is needed even though the library hopes to open at a new building in 2023.

“Although we received good news that the grant went through for the new library, they’re still going be in there long enough and the system’s in poor enough shape that it needs to be replaced,” Thompson says.

The advance will have to be paid back over 10 years at 2 percent interest the first 5 years, and 2.5 percent after.

The Library announced on Monday they have been approved for the $15 million grant that would allow a new library to be constructed on the corner of West Main and Academy Streets.

Director of the Galesburg Public Library Noelle Thompson has told WGIL that potential buyers have approached before but that was several years ago. She notes it’s a good location with proximity to City Hall and the Knox County Courthouse.
