Jacyln Smith-Esters was the first candidate into the Galesburg mayoral race and now she is the first out.

Smith-Esters was slated to be a write-in candidate for the April 6 election in which incumbent John Pritchard will now face challengers Peter Schwartzman and Kristine Crow.

As Smith-Esters ended her campaign she endorsed Peter Schwartzman.
Smith wrote a letter published in The Register-Mail Sunday and spoke to WGIL on Monday about her decision.

She says it’s important to “provide a progressive candidate as the best choice for our great city”, in the mayoral race.

She goes on to say that three progressive candidates, meaning her, Schwartzman and Crow will likely split the vote, leaving an easy path for John Pritchard to win a third term.

Smith Esters says she believes Schwartzman “possesses the same goals and vision for the city of Galesburg as I do and is also a man of experience leading on a community, collegiate and personal level.”

She is also emphasizing to her supporters that she has dropped out, so any write-in votes for her will not be counted in the final tally.
