Cluster of COVID cases makes ROWVA go remote

A cluster of cases in the ROWVA School District has forced classes back to a remote format.

The elementary school will be remote until the end of next week, and the junior high and high school are closed at least until Monday.

Originally on Monday, Superintendent Joe Sornberger sent a letter to parents and students saying 5 positive COVID cases in the district had been identified, all in upper elementary.

Then Tuesday a 6th case was identified, again in upper elementary but also two individuals in the Jr./Sr High building began displaying symptoms. Sornberger took that as a sign the cases may have been spreading outside the initial building.

7th through 12th grades in ROWVA will remote learning the rest of the week. Sornberger says this will allow them time to track symptoms and contact trace to reduce “further spread.” The elementary school will reopen on Mar. 26.

Also, all extra-curricular activities are cancelled in the meantime as well.

Sornberger says he knows this is frustrating but the “best thing we can all do now is work together to stay home as much as possible for the next few days.”

He says his goal is to “stop the spread as quickly as possible so we can get back to the learning and extracurricular activities that our students love.”
