Chicago police move to end man’s frequent mistaken detention

CHICAGO (AP) – Authorities say the Chicago Police Department has taken steps to end the 15-year ordeal of a man who alleges he’s been detained more than 60 times on the belief he was the man named in a southern Illinois arrest warrant. Darren Cole filed a federal lawsuit last week alleging he had been punched and had guns pointed at him by officers during stops that started in 2006. The stops didn’t lead to charges. During a court hearing Monday, attorney Marion Moore told U.S. District Judge Mary Rowland that Marion County authorities have withdrawn the warrant that was causing the 50-year-old Cole grief and Chicago police have told all officers not to stop Cole on the warrant.
