The Monmouth City Council on Monday approved a bid for the reconstruction of the airport hangar that burned down in 2019.

Aldermen in the Maple City were given a presentation by Jeff Olson with Hutchinson Engineering. Olson told the council that the bids were opened Friday at noon to which there were six bidders.

The lowest bid came in from Litteken (Construction out of Breese, Illinois.

“What we’re seeing is an average price of just over a million dollars in all other bids and Littekin came in at 14 percent below that at $871,635. This is over our original estimate.”

Olson explained to the council that since the original estimates were old, they didn’t take into account the changes in building material costs, specifically steel.

“But, you can see from all the bids that is kind of what the prices are today. So, I’m looking to recommend that you move forward with the project.”

With contractors looking to fill up their schedule with work, Olson told the council it was best to approve the contract despite it being over the budgeted amount.
