Plenty of community events on the horizon with your weekend

More and more community events are returning as the pandemic seems to be waning.

Now that Illinois has entered the “Bridge Phase” some more entertainment is returning and Prairie Players are welcoming the public back to a sense of normalcy.

Starting last night and running through the weekend, Prairie Players Civic Theatre is holding two one-act plays written by students of Knox College.

Fountainville, written by Veronica Langly, is about a group of postgraduates living under one roof having intense writing sessions to encourage each other to grow in their fields of work.
The second performance, Radio Play by Aiden Murphy, involves a duo trying to save their publicly funded radio program by hosting a pledge drive with help from an unexpected visitor.

COVID Procedures are still in place and seating is limited allowed by the Restore Illinois guidelines.

Tickets must be purchased online in advance. Face coverings are required to attend, though the performers will not be wearing them when on stage.

Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2 pm.

There’s plenty of ways this weekend to give back to the community, both in time and service or with your money.

Until Sunday, participants can take part in the Knox County Child Advocacy Center/Paladin Children’s Center virtual 5K.

Complete your 3.2 miles on your own time, before the end of the day on Saturday, and don’t forget to post your event picture on their Facebook page.

Donations can also be made by mailing a check to the Knox County Child Advocacy Center/Paladin Children’s Center at 139 South Cherry Street in Galesburg — with a memo of 5K donation.

The O.A.K.S. Senior Center in Galesburg is also holding a fish fry on Saturday from 11 a-m until 1:30 pm with a menu that includes fish, potato salad, coleslaw, piece of pie, and your choice of beverage in coffee, ice tea, or water.

Meals cost 10 dollars and dine-in or carry-out is available. Vendors will also be on-site between 9 am and 2 pm.

Also on Saturday, the Galesburg Downtown Council is holding their community clean-up day from 9 am until noon.

Volunteers will receive a raffle entry for a chance to win gifts from local organizations and businesses.
