Firefighters in Galesburg battled and extinguished a fire in an apartment building on South Academy Street on Wednesday evening.

According to a news release, firefighters from all three stations responded to 670 South Academy at around 5:21 where a multi-unit apartment building had light smoke coming from the roof.

Battalion Chief Donald Brackett assumed command and the Central Station crew made entry, extinguishing a kitchen fire.

An emergency callback was initiated to provide emergency fire coverage for the rest of the city.

The fire was contained to the kitchen by suppression crews and determined to be unintentionally caused by cooking.

Preliminary damage estimates are approximately $20,000. No injuries were reported.
