Suburban superintendent named interim Chicago schools CEO

CHICAGO (AP) – A longtime educator and former suburban schools superintendent has been named the interim head of Chicago Public Schools. City leaders named Jose Torres to the post on Monday. He most recently was president of the Illinois Math and Science Academy and formerly superintendent of Elgin School District. He’s also held leadership positions in CPS, the nation’s third-largest school district. He’ll replace CEO  Janice Jackson, who announced last month that she is leaving the post. District officials are searching for a new schools chief and plan to select one by the end of July.
