Western Illinois Congresswoman Cheri Bustos announced Monday that $1.2M dollars in funding to upgrade Galesburg Sanitary District’s Wastewater Treatment Plant was included in the House Appropriations Committee legislation.
Bustos sits on the House Appropriations Committee and made the proposal that will now move on to the committee’s mark-up process before advancing to the House and Senate before being brought to the President’s desk.
“As we work to build our communities back better, we have the opportunity to invest in our wastewater infrastructure, create jobs across our country, and rebuild our economy,” Congresswoman Bustos said. “I’m glad to announce that $1.2 million in funding for Galesburg Sanitary District’s Wastewater Treatment Plant has been included in this legislative package and these critical upgrades are now one step closer to becoming reality. I look forward to working with my colleagues as we continue to bring taxpayer funds back to our communities.”
In a release from the congresswoman’s office, Bustos says that the sanitation district operates a nearly century-old facility and the request is to improve two “Digesters” that were built in 1970 and 1944 respectively and bio-gas monitoring and safety equipment added to the facility.
The project is part of the replacement plan for a new Wastewater Treatment Plant and will help ensure compliance with current and future National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit limits.
The full project is expected to cost $1.5M.
