After several delays due to the federal approval process required to build on airports, things are starting to move forward with the rebuilding of the hangar at Monmouth’s Municipal Airport.

Aldermen in the Maple City on Tuesday approved the construction inspection contract Hutchinson Engineering, the city’s airport engineer.

City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher tells WGIL that this is one of three major milestones that need to happen before construction can begin.

“Because we’re using federal funds, there is a federal requirement that 80 percent of the materials be made in America. So the contractor and all of his sub-contractors needed to provide the supporting documentation to show that at least 80 percent of the materials will be by Americans.”

Steinbrecher says the final milestone involves the detailed drawings of how the whole hangar pieces together.

“Competition and approval of the ‘shop drawings.’ These are the very detailed drawings of how to show how the building will be assembled and attached to the foundation. All that ‘detail stuff’ on the actual construction.”

Steinbrecher adds that the city could see work begin this fall on the hangar’s assembly.
