Knoxville City Council approved the promotion of a city police lieutenant to the rank of Captain at their meeting Monday night.

Captain Don Ryner is the first person to ever hold this position with the Knoxville Police Department.

Meeting notes from Alderman Charlie Gruner say that everyone present gave Ryner’s promotion a standing ovation.

However, Ryner’s tenure as Captain will be short-lived. He’s set to retire at the end of the month.

Ryner has been second in command with KPD since 2008 and has served with the department for over two decades.
