Excavators at future library finding artifacts from the past

The Galesburg Public Library is having an exciting summer as they prep for a new library and uncover some interesting artifacts from yesterday in the process. Library Director Noelle Thompson has a monthly blog that keeps the public updated on the new building’s progress and other happenings. She wrote in a post last week that the excavation contractors have uncovered lots of items revealing the history of the block. Those include a swimming pool belonging to a motel; tons of bricks; oil tanks, pipes, cisterns, horseshoes, and more. The library staff has some of the smaller items and will put them on display or they’ll be turned into artwork. Thompson adds that all the trees from the block have been removed. This only came after the city arborist determined that they were all beyond saving.
