Galesburg City Council will meet Monday and consider adding a non-voting student representative.

The student wouldn’t have voting powers and wouldn’t attend executive sessions. But they would get a chance to be a voice for youth in the community.

They would be asked to provide reports on youth and school events to the council at their bi-weekly meetings.

The ordinance states that the Mayor, Peter Schwartzmen, can determine his own process for selecting a person to bring forward for the council to vote on.

The student representative would receive a salary of $150 per month, and an alternate student rep would get $75 a month.

If the regular rep couldn’t attend a meeting then the alternative would be ready to step up in their place.

There would be a two year-term for both the primary and alternative rep. The idea is to have a student for one year be the alternate before being promoted the next.

Council documents say the annual cost overall would be $2,700.

Aldermen are also voting on a developer’s agreement for more holiday lights in the downtown at their meeting tonight.

The focus last year was on Park Plaza and Main Street.

The goal for this year was to complement and expand upon what the Galesburg Downtown Council and Downtown Community Partnership did in 2020.

The estimated total cost for the project this year is about $45,000.

GDC will provide $25,000 and, if approved, the city would provide $20,000 in TIF IV funds.

The new decorations include 12 pole-mounted snowflakes continuing east on Main Street through the underpass, 12 2D and 3D installations on the OT Johnson Lot, and 6 feet letters that spell Galesburg that will stay up year-round.

Last year the displays included 36 light pole-mounted decorations, tower light decorations, a 17-foot tree installed in Park Plaza, and various five-foot-tall light decorations as well.
