The District 205 School Board is beginning the first steps on relocating Bright Futures Preschool and the district offices to what was Northwoods Church.

The south portion of the building has already been renovated and turned into the Galesburg Area Vocational Center and will be welcoming students starting next week.

At this month’s school board meeting, board member Rodney Phelps, who sits on the buildings and grounds committee, says that steps are moving forward on designing the newly acquired facility, known now as the 940 Building.

“The north part then, we’ve just started with Legget on designing on [the] floorplan and layout up there,” Phelps said Monday night. “So our Bright Futures Program is going to come to the 940 Building. And, a little farther out potentially, the central offices that are here will go to the 940 Building.”

Phelps added that there have been inquires into selling the Harrison Street Building that currently houses Bright Futures and the District Offices.

The board did take action to approve fencing for the Fremont Street property after people were driving through fenced-off locations to get access to a back street.

The school board on Monday was also given a progress report on the work that continues to come along with the Galesburg High School renovation project.

Lee Marbach with Russell Construction gave the school board Monday night an update on the progress in the work. The high school was to allow students back starting the 13th but had to delay it another week to finish up some pressing work.

Marbach told the board there are still some delays in a few materials because of delays in raw materials and that students will be back in classrooms without these items for some time.

“The two big things you’re going to see that’s missing throughout, and this has to do with material/supply chain issues, is lockers as you’ve heard me talk about many times. Those are on track, the last we heard was late September delivery. So in the space right now where lockers are — they are plasticed off, so students are in a safe environment and can’t get into the locker cavities.”

He also told the board that marker boards were delayed and would not be in until late October. Marbach told the board that a couple of semi-trucks would be making those deliveries and as they arrive will be unloading them and installing them during the nights.

Students are expected back in classrooms on Monday at GHS.
