It was almost two years ago that the hangar at the Monmouth Municipal Airport burned down and the new hangar looks like its replacement will be completed before the end of the year.

On Monday, the City Council approved a change in the airport engineer. Hutchison Engineering, who had been engineering the work for the city, lost their airport engineer and requested to be released from the work.

City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher says the city went through a request for qualifications process to find a replacement firm and eventually went with Hanson Engineering.

“So we went through an RFQ process. We had two inquiries and only one firm submitted a statement of qualifications and that was Hanson,” Steinbrecher tells WGIL. “We reviewed their qualifications and because the airport engineer who was with Hutchison would also now be with Hanson, we felt there was a lot of continuity.”

Despite the change, Steinbrecher says that they expect the hangar to be assembled on-site before the end of the year.

He said that foundation work would get started during the second week of October and the hangar assembly would be the following month.

“They still are expecting the hangar, it’s being built in sections, and so it will be delivered by mid-November. Those sections should easily go up and be secured in place relatively quickly. And they’re still projecting they will be operational by the end of the calendar year.”
