Despite the Galesburg Silver Streaks 3-5 record, Friday night’s game with the Alleman Pioneers carries some historical significance.

The matchup between the two teams will mark the first time in the history of the Western Big Six that two African-American head coaches will face off against each other.

Coach Derrek Blackwell was hired as Galesburg’s head football coach back in June and, about 24 hours before that, Fritz Dieudonne was hired by Alleman.

Blackwell encourages everyone able to witness the moment.

“So, it’s the first battle of two black coaches in Western Big Six history and I think that is very historical and everybody should get out and come see that. Whether you’re from Galesburg, Rock Island, or if you’re a Moline fan, just get out there and might want to witness this. It’s a big thing.”

Dieudonne highlights the moment with WGIL.

“I know the impact of having representation. And, I think if anyone is able to make the drive to be able to say they witness the game… the first time two [black head coaches] met one another I think is definitely worth your time.”

Galesburg comes into the meeting at Rock Island Alleman with a 3-3 record in the Western Big Six. The Pioneers are looking for their first win of the season.
