Galesburg City Council will have their 2021 property tax levy on first reading Monday, November 15th. The proposed levy would be $9.7 million, an increase of 2.64% over 2020. Over half of the levy is marked for police and fire pensions which have been forecasted to take up a ballooning portion of property tax revenue. The levy also funds a portion of the City’s General Fund, Park & Recreation Fund, IMRF obligations in the General Fund; the majority of the Public Library’s operations. Before Monday’s meeting, there will be a public hearing for the FY2022 budget. The Council will also have a final vote on dissolving TIF District I in downtown that’s set to expire at the end of the year after being created in 1985. Community Development Director Steve Gugliotta says most properties in the TIF are no longer dilapidated but the few that are could be welcomed into another TIF.
