Galesburg Police last Tuesday night responded to an apartment in the 2600 block of Springer Road for reports of two male subjects fighting. An off-duty Galesburg Police Officer was attacked in the incident. When officers arrived, they were directed to an apartment and 29-year old Kelly Hawkinson of Galesburg was identified as one of the attackers. Officers made contact with Hawkinson as he attempted to charge at officers yelling obscenities. With the use of a taser, Hawkinson was taken into custody. The incident started when Hawkinson began threatening the off-duty officer and followed him to an apartment demanding he apologizes to him. The off-duty officer admitted that he didn’t know Hawkinson, but apologized to him anyway. A fight ensued and Hawkinson head-butted and punched the officer several times before saying he was going to get a gun. Hawkinson was charged with Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer, Resisting a Peace Officer, Threatening a Public Official, Aggravated Battery causing Great Bodily Harm, and Criminal Damage to Property.
