James Robertson has won the Democratic primary for Knox County Sheriff in a close race with Doug Sampson.

The final tally had Robertson with about 52 percent of the vote compared to Sampson’s 48 percent.

Both Robertson and Sampson are former Knox County Deputies, with Robertson currently the Chief of Police in Williamsfield and Sampson, the EMS Coordinator at Cottage Hospital until their closure.

Robertson got more votes in Galesburg, and Sampson got slightly more votes in the rest of the county.

Since Galesburg leans toward Democrats and the rest of the County leans Republicans, that gave Roberston enough votes to put him over the top.

The final tally gave Robertson a 91-vote win out of 2,345 ballots cast.

Robertson will now face a General Election between Republican Jack Harlan, a retired U.S. Army First Sergeant, and current detective and K9 handler with the Knox County Sheriff’s Department.

Community Service Officer Zac Cox is running as an independent.
