Galesburg woman facing DUI charges, Elmwood teen seriously injured in crash

Illinois State Police say that a two-vehicle crash on the 4th of July resulted in a Galesburg woman facing charges and a 14-year-old girl from Elmwood suffering serious injuries.

The Galesburg woman was 29-year-old Brittney Thomas. She was driving a Chrysler van north on Illinois 97 near U.S. 150 in Knox County.

A 2021 Honda SUV being driven by a 36-year-old female from Elmwood, and her 14-year-old passenger, was traveling south at the same location.

Thomas failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line, and struck the SUV head-on. Both drivers were transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 14-year-old female passenger was flown to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Thomas had expired registration and was not in possession of her driver’s license. She’s facing charges that include aggravated DUI, Improper Lane Usage, Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, and Driving on the Wrong Side of the Roadway.
