Galesburg Aldermen seemed to carefully consider allowing golf carts and UTVs on certain city streets on Monday night (August 1st). But then they unanimously voted it down. The City administration and Traffic Advisory Commission had recommended against this ordinance when it first came up, but at the request of Aldermen it came up for a vote. Ward 7 Council member Larry Cox says he considered it a balance of freedom versus safety and announced he would abstain and follow the majority. Ward 4’s Dwight White says he agreed with Cox but wanted to follow his constituent’s wishes. He said every call he received asked him to vote against it. Police Chief Russ Idle says the ordinance would have required the driver to have a valid license. Depending on the type of vehicle Idle says a driver could be arrested and their vehicle impounded if they were driving without a license.
