Galesburg Police on Tuesday last week (August 30th) was dispatched to Interstate 74 near mile marker 55 for a sedan that had lost a tire. A Galesburg Police Community Service Officer was already on the scene and police made contact with the driver: 21-year-old Shanya Giles-Cobbs of Chicago. According to police reports, officers detected a strong cannabis odor emitting from the vehicle immediately. Giles-Cobbs told police she just purchased the vehicle in Davenport. Officers then discovered Giles-Cobbs’ license was suspended and she only had a driving permit. A 17-year-old male and a 15-year-old female both of Burlington, Iowa were also inside the vehicle. Giles-Cobbs was detained as officers searched the vehicle and the other passengers. The 15-year-old female refused to comply with police orders and police had to physically take the teen’s purse which contained around seven grams of cannabis. Giles-Cobbs and the teen were placed under arrest and transported to the Knox County Jail for processing. Giles-Cobbs was charged with no registration, driving on a suspended license, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. The 15-year-old female was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis and resisting a peace officer.
