The City of Monmouth will be seeing some delays to a planned major roadwork project that was aimed at fixing roads and sidewalks through several city streets.

Public Works Director Andy Jackson informed the City Council on Tuesday that the Illinois Department of Transportation was declaring the maintenance of the streets to be a road construction project, which requires more review.

City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher told WGIL on Wednesday that the hope is that approvals come in this fall so work can get started this year. “Given the delays that we’re seeing from all of the state agencies on these grants, we’re prepared to accept the fact that we may not be able to get the project started until next spring.”

Some other roadwork projects are moving forward. The Council approved the Western Illinois Regional Council in administering a Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant for the replacement of a water main on West Harlem Avenue.

Steinbrecher told the city council that this was the third CDBG grant that WIRC was administering for the city in the last four years. He says that the water main work can be done during the winter months and the hope was it would get started by the end of the year.

Once the water main is replaced, the road will be reconstructed
