Featuring mega mums and pumpkins, Galesburg’s newest garden center set to open

Mums and pumpkins are a sure sign of fall, and they’ll soon be available at Galesburg’s newest garden center.

Deadhead Plant Ranch owner Chris Schertz holds a mega mum that will be available at its Galesburg location.

Deadhead Plant Ranch will open Thursday, Sept. 15 just east of Lowe’s Home Improvement store on West Carl Sandburg Drive. Chris and Blaire Schertz, who own and operate Deadhead Plant Ranch in Macomb, announced this spring they were planning to open a location in Galesburg.

Blaire Schertz said Deadhead Plant Ranch will focus on fall decor through late October, and will reopen in the spring as a full garden center with a large variety of annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, vegetables and shrubs.

Schertz said their store will offer “pretty much any kind of pumpkin you can think of, and just tons of mums, spanning a variety of different shapes, sizes and colors.

Deadhead Plant Ranch will operate out of a temporary event tent this fall. Eventually, the garden center and nursery will include a large barn-type structure and a 30 x 100 foot greenhouse.

Schertz said they have been overwhelmed with the response since they announced they were coming to Galesburg, adding, “We haven’t even opened yet, and the welcome has been incredible.”

Deadhead Plant Ranch will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.
