Only a minor citation has been given to the Galesburg resident who hit a child with their car near a bus stop last week.

Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin says the driver was issued a ticket for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

After reviewing incident reports and speaking with Police Chief  Russ Idle, Karlin felt no additional charges were necessary.

The police report from the incident says the driver told police she always has trouble with kids playing in the street in the 200 block of Huston Street.

She says she didn’t see the child, there was some sun in her eyes and her vehicle sideswiped the child.

The female child who was struck was waiting for the bus to King Elementary.

The girl told officers that she was walking on the edge of the road eastbound when all of a sudden she was hit by a car, although said it wasn’t going too fast.

Nonetheless, her injuries were serious.

She had a gash in her leg that exposed tendons, muscles, and bone.

The child’s parents told officers at the hospital that they don’t believe the girl was merely sideswiped but directly hit.
