Changes are coming to trash and recycling collection in the City of Galesburg.
The City Council on Monday approved a new five-year contract with Waste Management for the city’s refuse and recycling collection services and an additional two-year option.
Interim City Manager Wayne Carl told council members there were several changes coming in the new contract, including the elimination of the twice-a-year city-wide cleanup days in favor of monthly pick-ups.
“The service would allow residents to call and have their ‘white goods’ and bulky items, household hazardous waste items, paint, batteries, fluorescent lamps, automotive fluids, sharps, and old electronics picked up at their door. The residents would be allowed to dispose of one ‘white good’ and one bulky item per month at no charge.”
If customers had several white goods or bulky items to be picked up, they could purchase a bulky item sticker.
Waste Management would also offer a new compost backhaul service would also be implemented for residents to pick up compost from the city oversized brush facility to use at their homes.
In addition to the change in the contract, the monthly refuse cost is increasing from $16.70 to $18.54 a month and will see a five percent increase year to year.
