A legendary figure in the Monmouth College sports community passed away this morning.
65-year-old Roger Sander who made his mark on the Scots basketball and baseball teams over a 40-year period died early Friday at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
As a hoops player, Sander became the top rebounder in school history by a mile, in records that stand to this day.
With 939 career rebounds, Sander trampled every MC rebounding mark, and he could score, too, as evidenced by his career average of 17.4 points per game. Monmouth teams compiled a 60-23 record during the tenure of Sander who was named All-American in 1977 and 1978.
Sander returned to his alma mater in 1984 to coach basketball and baseball as an assistant under Terry Glasgow.
That stretch includes a 21-year span as head baseball coach where his teams went almost exactly .500 including a regional appearance.
Three times Sander was named Midwestern Conference Coach of the Year.
