Man charged for murder in Grand Ave. shooting pleads not guilty

Asheem Monte Afutu

A Galesburg man facing murder charges for the shooting on Grand Avenue this summer pleaded not guilty on Monday afternoon in Knox County Court.

33-year-old Asheem Afutu faces charges of murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with the killing of Gregory D. Tucker in a Grand Ave. parking lot on July 24th, 2022.

Afutu is being represented by Public Defender Chris Kantak. He was extradited from Florida after being on the run for about 3 months.

His bond is set at $1 million, meaning Afutu would have to post $100,000 to be released, which as of Monday he has not.

Afutu’s next court date is a pretrial conference set for January 6, 2023, at 9 a.m.
