SAFE-T Act among 200 Illinois laws to debut in 2023

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – The most talked-about Illinois law taking effect on Sunday with the dawn of a new year is one whose future is up in the air.

The SAFE-T Act criminal justice overhaul was supposed to end the practice of allowing criminal defendants to post bail and leave jail while awaiting trial, but a judge declared that part of the law unconstitutional. The rest of the law will still come into effect Jan. 1.

Other new laws ban the use of latex gloves in food preparation, reduce fees on Illinois-manufactured vehicles and make it easier for people to file for orders of protection.
