Knox County has set dates and locations for the registration and sale of side-by-side and non-highway vehicle stickers.
The County Board approved an ordinance in October to allow non-highway vehicles to operate on county roads with the requirement of the registration sticker. The pre-registration events were in the works at the time of the ordinance passing to prevent the County Clerk’s office from being inundated with people looking to register.
Residents can pre-purchase their required stickers on Saturday, January 14, at the Sparta Township Hall in Wataga from 9:00-11:00 a.m. or the Liquor Box in Oneida from 1:00-3:00 p.m. If residents can’t make the January 14 date work, A pre-sale will be held the weekend after, Saturday, January 21, at the Oak Run Clubhouse in Dahinda from 9:00-11:00 a.m. or at the Abingdon American Legion from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
“The plan is for this ordinance to take effect beginning February 1, 2023.” County Board Approves Ordinance allowing off-highway vehicles on county roads.
“We are excited to help provide a much-needed service to our side-by-side and non-highway vehicle enthusiasts and encourage persons to pre-register their equipment at these events,” stated Knox County Clerk Scott Erickson in a press release on Friday.
The licenses are good for one year and cost $100. The stickers can also be purchased at the Knox County Courthouse during regular business hours.
The ordinance will allow non-highway vehicles to drive on county roads, with the exception of County 10. A self-inspection would need to be done that includes five photos. Drivers would have to be 18 years of age and insured. Passengers have to be at least 10 years old. And several pieces of safety equipment would have to be installed on the vehicles.
Knoxville and Abingdon have ordinances permitting these types of non-highway vehicles on city roads. This permit would allow for only rural county roads.
