Police chase starting in Iowa ends in fiery crash in Monmouth

A police chase that started in West Burlington, Iowa, ended in a three-vehicle crash in Monmouth on Monday afternoon.

According to an Illinois State Police news release, a West Burlington police officer was in pursuit of a black Nissan Murano that crossed into Illinois.

Upon reaching the intersection of US 34 and Illinois Route 164 in Monmouth, the driver of the Murano failed to yield and struck a semi-truck, which then struck a Ford F-250 truck around 12:26 p.m. Monday. The Murano caught fire and the driver was pulled from the burning vehicle by a Warren County Deputy. 

According to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, deputies deployed fire extinguishers to battle the flames and were assisted by Monmouth Police officers. The fire was subdued by the Monmouth Fire Department.

The driver of the Murano was flown to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The deputy was transported to an area hospital and treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The drivers of the semi-truck and pickup truck were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

An ISP spokesperson said the investigation is on-going and no other information is available at this time.
