An opportunity for the City of Galesburg to add another green space or park will be discussed at a community meeting on Wednesday. The purpose of the meeting is to obtain feedback from residents on what they’d like to see in a new park. The 3/4 acre area that was donated to the City is located in the 1900 block of East Main Street – on the corner of East Main and Chestnut.

A portion of the property was once the home of long-standing Virginia’s Ice Cream. A boarded-up house on the property is expected to be demolished in the next three months. Special Projects Coordinator for the City of Galesburg, Tom Simkins created some renderings of what could go into the park.

“Maybe we go in and put in a walking path – maybe next year…and some trees,” Simkins said. “Then the other amenities, we just add as we go. It’s important to have the end product in mind.

“At the very end of this, it’d be good if we had a gardeners agreement signed on by maybe some people in the neighborhood to caretake the property so the City didn’t have to add another park to its list. That’s what’s going on at Full Viewpoint Park.”

Simkins said one of the objectives for the Galesburg Heart and Soul initiative was to improve the “entrance to the city.”

A meeting is being held Wednesday at the Galesburg Public Library where residents can have the opportunity to give input. The meeting will be on the second floor of the library starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
