Galesburg City Council chambers at City Hall.

Galesburg City Council on Monday will meet for a work session in which they will cover retail recruitment and potential community center partnerships.

Mayor Peter Schwartzman tells WGIL that while Galesburg is “doing well with retail, we strive to do better.”

The Council will hear from an outside firm that specializes in market and retail analysis and retail recruitment.

Mayor Schwartzman says with “this new information in mind, we can decide how we want to move forward to attract more businesses to town.”

The second item for discussion is potential partnerships involved in a Galesburg community center.

Schwartzman says the City has been engaging with potential partners since last summer and had face-to-face meetings with over 20 local agencies and non-profits so far in 2023.

He says the meetings were to see what services they provide and if they desire to partner with the city in the provision of services or leasing space in the community center.

Schwartzman believes this will “clarify how significant the need is for such a center and how engaged and receptive key stakeholders have been.”
