Project 350, the volunteer-led project to plant 350 trees in Galesburg, just passed the halfway point of its five-year goal.

This past weekend, 13 citizens put another 16 trees into the ground around town which pushed the project past the halfway mark with now 176 trees planted in just over one year of work in the community.

The trees planted in that time frame represent 52 different species. Additionally, of the 50-thousand dollars allotted for Project 350, 40 percent of those funds have been spent.

Trees were planted on West 3rd Street, near the former Cooke School, at O.N. Custer Park, and along South Street, on the east side of the underpass.

Volunteers had a beautiful day to assist them in the work with temperatures on Saturday steadily rising to a high of 78 degrees.
