Thursday, Galesburg Police responded to the 800 block of East Second Street after a woman found a grenade in her basement.
The woman told police her deceased husband was in the military. She said some of the items also came from a family-owned mine. In addition to the grenade, the woman also discovered blasting caps, liquid Mercury, and a small explosive with a fuse. Blasting caps are used to detonate an explosive charge.
Officers learned the blasting caps were still active, and the grenade was a CS grenade according to police reports. CS grenades are typically used for riot control or crowd control like a smoke grenade.
Galesburg Police contacted the Quad City Bomb Squad and an officer with the Bettendorf Police Department arrived on the scene.
The officer secured the items in a bomb-safe box and they were taken to the Bettendorf Police Department for disposal.
