Work on Lancaster Park starting next Spring

Galesburg City Council on Monday night approved a contract for architectural and engineering work on Lancaster Park, a 1-acre park on the City’s Southwest side.

Lancaster by next Fall will have new playground equipment, a picnic shelter, a half-court basketball area, benches, pathways for accessibility, and parking areas.

The aim is for work to start on Lancaster in the Spring of 2024 and be finished by October.

Interim City Manager Wayne Carl says the park will be closed during construction since “pretty much the whole park will be worked on.”

The contract Council approved Monday was for Farnsworth Group to do the architectural and engineering work for $37,000. Farnsworth is also performing the same services for the renovation of H.T. Custer Park.

The overall project budget is about $450,000 with half budgeted to come from the Open Space and Land Acquisition grant and half from the City.

Ward 4 Council member Dwight White “tipped his hat” to the work done by the Southside Taskforce in talking with neighbors and bringing this project to fruition.
