Galesburg Police around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday responded to East Main Street to meet with a man who found a loaded gun while on a walk. The man told police that while on a walk with his wife, they were walking near a vacant house on Madison Street when his wife looked down and saw the gun near the sidewalk.

The man said the house’s yard was recently mowed within the last two or three days but believed the lawn mower didn’t touch the gun. The gun was a Taurus 9mm handgun loaded with six rounds and one in the chamber. The caller had unloaded the gun by the time police arrived.
According to police reports, the gun would have been sitting there for some time as it was already collecting rust. GPD took possession. The firearm was defaced and the serial number was not legible.
