Galesburg man charged with DUI after found asleep in a SUV in the roadway; Bellwood man charged with DUI in Galesburg Sunday

Around 6:30 in the morning on Saturday, Galesburg Police responded to the 1000 block of Lindwood Road for a well-being check. Dispatch advised a motorist was seen sleeping in a vehicle in the roadway. Police made contact with the 37-year-old man who denied sleeping in the vehicle. The SUV had an empty gas tank, a flat tire, and possibly a dead battery. The man was emitting an alcoholic odor and continually denied drinking. The man became increasingly upset and refused to perform a field sobriety test. The man would later change his story and admit to smoking cannabis and drinking wine. He did provide a breath sample which indicated he had a BAC of .164. He was eventually transported to the Knox County Jail. He was charged with Driving Under the Influence of a combination of intoxicating compounds.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, Galesburg Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near South West and West Knox Streets after running a pair of stop signs. Officers approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver, a 26-year-old Bellwood, Illinois man. The man’s front seat passenger was passed out and had vomit on himself. While speaking to the driver, officers observed the man to have slurred speech and had difficulty finding his driver’s license. The man removed an unopened can of alcohol from his pants pocket in the process. Officers also observed a baggie of cannabis and a clear cup of alcohol in a cup holder. They performed a field sobriety test which indicated signs of impairment and he was placed under arrest. The man had a BAC of .173. His passenger was evaluated at OSF and released. The driver was charged with DUI A1, DUI A2, and Possession of Cannabis in a Motor Vehicle in addition to disobeying stop signs citations.
