Galesburg Firefighters responded to a fire last night at Moon Towers where an apartment sustained heavy smoke and fire damage.
No injuries were reported and preliminary damage estimates are at $7,000.
Fire crews arrived just before 5:30 p.m. to encounter heavy smoke in the third-floor hallway of the 170 S. West St. building.
The Central Station Fire Crew located and quickly extinguished a kitchen fire in an apartment on the third floor. The Fremont and Brooks Station Fire Crews worked to remove smoke from all of the apartments on the third floor.
One apartment occupant had safely exited at the time of the fire.
An emergency callback of off-duty fire personnel was initiated to provide emergency coverage for the City. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, due to cooking, by Galesburg Fire Department Investigators.
