Resident escapes Galesburg fire by jumping from second-story window

A resident was forced to jump out of a second-story window to avoid a fire in Galesburg on Wednesday morning.

According to a news release, the Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 987 Mulberry St. around 4:28 a.m. Wednesday. The response included all three stations and the 11 personnel on duty.

Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire in a stairwell.

According to Galesburg Fire Chief Randy Hovind, a resident of the home jumped out of a second story window due to the smoke and flames. The interior and exterior of the home sustained heavy smoke and fire damage. No injuries were reported. Damage estimates to the home have not yet been determined.

The fire is under investigation by Galesburg Fire Department Investigators.
