The first Republican candidate to file for a congressional district in central and northern Illinois in the 2024 election is dropping out of the race.

Ray Estrada, R-Galesburg, announced Tuesday that he is postponing his campaign in the Republican primary race. Estrada declared his candidacy in April.

In a statement, Estrada said, “Forty-four years ago, my family and I fled Nicaragua to escape the deadly civil war and communist takeover. We found safety and opportunity in Galesburg, Illinois, where I raised my family, and continue today to give to the community that has provided us so much opportunity.

“It saddens me to withdraw from the race, but after careful consideration and discussions with my family, I feel the timing is wrong for my candidacy this election cycle and I have decided to postpone my campaign for Congress in the 17th Congressional District in Illinois to focus my time on my family and my philanthropic endeavors. I want to thank my family, my friends, donors and all of my supporters and I look forward to entering the political arena in a future election to serve the citizens of our great state.”

Democrat Eric Sorensen was elected to the seat last year.
