The Register-Mail will transition to mail delivery of print edition

Gannett Co. Inc which owns The Register-Mail newspaper in Galesburg announced that next month it will move to postal delivery exclusively to deliver print editions.

The change will begin on Nov. 14.

Gannett owned papers in Peoria, Kewanee, Canton and Macomb are also transitioning to postal delivery.

A story posted on The Register Mail’s website Wednesday says the change is “part of an effort to improve delivery consistency and optimize resources amidst ongoing labor challenges, fluctuating fuel prices, competition for workers from door-to-door delivery services, and increasing digital demand.”

The Register-Mail editor Corina Curry says, “Switching to mail delivery for the print newspaper at this time will allow us to focus more of our energies on providing the community of Galesburg with the best local news coverage we can.”

Gannett Co. Inc., which operates more than 200 daily local newspapers, has already introduced the approach in multiple markets and now plans an expansion as digital subscriptions are surging.

The Register-Mail is expected to arrive in the mail on the same day although Sunday papers will be delivered with Saturday’s mail.

Subscribers will receive letters in the mail before the delivery change is implemented. The notifications will also include instructions on accessing digital products.
