Galesburg Council taking final vote on flag ordinance on Monday

Galesburg City Council will have a flag ordinance on final reading Monday night, which could end the flying of most flags on city property that aren’t the American or state flag.

This comes after last month a majority of the City Council approved flying the Respect for Life Flag in October.

Many of them said that they felt it was only fair as long as they were without a flag policy, and after flying the LGBT Pride Flag in June.

There have been those critical of the policy though, including NAACP President Pam Davidson.

She criticized the policy at a recent work session and expressed a wish to fly a Black heritage flag at City Hall.

All Council members except Dwight White and Sarah Davis have told WGIL they plan to support the ordinance.

Mayor Peter Schwartzman tells WGIL he supports the policy because it seems to be what a “majority of constituents” want.

City Clerk Kelli Bennewitz says Galesburg has never had a flag ordinance but they are not uncommon.
