Local service clubs are once again joining forces to make Galesburg look a little more festive this holiday season.
Members of the Galesburg Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis clubs have hung red bows on every ornamental street light in Galesburg. The project is completely funded and carried out by the service clubs.
The volunteers put up and take down 489 red bows throughout the city to bring joy to neighborhoods during the holiday season.
“We love doing this for our community,” said volunteer Mary Burgland. “If you see or know any of these volunteers, be sure to thank them.”
This year’s volunteers and their neighborhoods include:
- George Burgland for Losey Street and the Farnham Street Bridge.
- Tom Simkins for The Amtrak Station.
- Darren Stevenson for Chambers Street
- TJ Scott for Jefferson Street.
- Adam Vitale, Larry Knuth and Daniella Irle for Prairie Street.
- Mike Knuth for Cherry Street.
- Pam Perkins for H.T. Custer Park.
- Gayla Pacheco and Sandra Gray for the WC Jackson Bridge.
- Kevin Salsman and Bill Sime for Willard Street.
- Chuck Nelson for Florence Avenue.
- Dave Bowman and Doug Gau for Beecher Avenue.
- Tom Engebretson for Bateman Street
- Ron Peck for Peck Park.
- Derek Clayton and Wendel Hunigan, volunteers at large.
The Lions decorate Lincoln Park and Lake Storey Park, and the Kiwanis Club takes care of Kiwanis Park.
Galesburg’s historic ornamental street lights date back to the 1920s.
