Galesburg Council starts 2024 on ‘positive’ beat

Galesburg City Council again on Tuesday night unanimously cleared a number of items, on all unanimous votes.

Mayor Peter Schwartzman encouraged public comments to remain as positive as possible.

Several Aldermen mentioned that with a new year and a new city manager, it was time to find ways to work together.

Council unanimously approved a resolution that states the Director of Finance and Information Systems is also the City Treasurer.

City Manager Eric Hanson says the current ordinance specifically designates Gloria Osborn as City Treasurer.

He says this will make it easier through the process of finding a new Director of Finance and Information Systems.

Tuesday was Osborn’s last meeting in the position and was given a standing ovation after remarks from City Manager Eric Hanson recognizing her decades of service.

Council also approved a bid from Brandt Construction out of Milan, Illinois to make improvements to Lancaster Park.

The bid was $450,000 but half of the costs will be covered by an OSLAD grant from the State of Illinois.

Aldermen rejected all bids for a new backup dispatch center because they were all substantially overbudget.

Still, there seems to be substantial interest in doing the project, but perhaps in a scaled-down fashion to bring it into budget.

Hanson and Council members also publicly thanked public works and public safety staff for their work over the past week between large snowfalls.
