What is the future of public transportation in Galesburg? Discussion starts at Monday work session

Galesburg is set to start a several-month journey to explore the future of public transportation in the city and beyond.

A Galesburg public transportation service audit and analysis will be the topic of a Galesburg City Council work session at 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall.

City Manager Eric Hanson tells WGIL, “It will be an all-encompassing look at what we’re doing, what we’re being asked to do, and what we can realistically do in the future, as far as public transportation.

“The community has changed over the years, from population to needs, so we’re undertaking a process to reevaluate the whole transit approach system.”

Hanson said Monday’s work session will be the first step in a process that will run from February through July. During that time, the city will engage the community, along with representatives from key groups and stakeholders on the needs for public transpiration in the Galesburg area.

“There are challenges within the current system with just how long it takes to get folks in need to their destinations, so that will be discussed,” Hanson said.

“We’ll also look into rural transit. A lot of the federal and state dollars we get have to do with expanding services into rural areas.”

The next regular meeting of the Galesburg City Council is set for Monday, Feb. 5.
