Galesburg man facing a slew of DUI charges after crashing into a utility pole

Galesburg Police on Thursday around 5:20 pm responded to a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of East Third and Day Streets. A caller told dispatch the vehicle struck a utility pole. Officers are familiar with the owner of the sedan. Police had already received a complaint about the male driver being intoxicated earlier in the night at a gas station. The driver and female occupant had already left the scene of the crash by the time officers arrived. About ten minutes later, dispatch received a call from a man stating his sedan was stolen. Police responded to that address and made contact with the female who would later admit to being in the car during the time of the crash. The woman’s story changed and police then made contact with the 22-year-old male suspect. The man agreed to a portion of a field sobriety test which indicated signs of impairment and a BAC of .135. Officers also found the man at a residence he is court-ordered to stay away from due to an Order of Protection. The man was charged with DUI A1, DUI A2, Aggravated DUI – Suspended License, Driving While Suspended, Failure to Reduce Speed, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Violation of an Order of Protection. He was taken and held at the Knox County Jail.
