The City of Galesburg Public Transportation will receive 7 new paratransit vehicles through an Illinois Department of Transportation grant.
IDOT announced the award on Thursday, as part of more than 500 paratransit vehicles valued at $57 million going to providers around the state.
Galesburg Transit Manager Kraig Boynton says, “The last time IDOT released vehicles through this program was in 2019, and I give credit to our drivers and mechanics for their diligent work in keeping our existing fleet in working order to the best of their abilities.”
In addition to the seven vehicles, Galesburg will receive two additional battery-electric paratransit vehicles (with associated charging stations) with funding from the Federal Transit Authority’s Low or No Emission Vehicle Program.
IDOT projects a delivery time of six months to two years for all vehicles listed above.
The vehicles awarded to the City of Galesburg are mid-sized paratransit vehicles that will be incorporated into the Paratransit Program, which provides transportation services to those individuals unable to utilize the traditional fixed-route bus system.
The new vehicles will also aid the fixed-route transit system, serving as backup vehicles, until IDOT authorizes vehicles specific to the fixed-route system. More information on transit services, including both fixed-route bus services and paratransit services, can be found on the city’s website.
