Galesburg’s Gauge Shipp wins semifinal match, will wrestle for another state title

A Galesburg High School wrestler is a win away from being a back-to-back state champion.

Silver Streaks senior Gauge Shipp remained unbeaten through 44 matches this season with a 12-2 major decision over Omar Samayoa of Elmhurst IC Catholic in a 132-pound Class 2A state semifinal match Friday at State Farm Center in Champaign.

Shipp will face Ty Edwards (46-2) of Yorkville Christian in the 132-pound state title match Saturday in Champaign. Shipp went 50-0 en route to winning the 138-pound state title last season as a junior.

Fellow Galesburg senior Rocky Almendarez dropped his 120-pound semifinal match 4-0 to Deven Casey of Elmhurst IC Catholic. Almendarez (41-2) will compete in the wrestlebacks Saturday for a chance to finish third.
